Comicdom Con Athens 2011

Comics have no borders! This could be the “theme” of this year’s multicultural and rich in artistic variety Comicdom Con Athens.

For superhero fans, the “Batman: Yesterday & Tomorrow” exhibition -devoted to one of the most popular and exciting comic heroes- traveled to Athens from San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum, and featured original art by legendary creators like Bob Kane and Neal Adams!

Those fascinated by the merging of comic art and graphic design, had the opportunity to meet acclaimed American cartoonist Chris Ware, one of the most significant creators in the field.

The “European School” aficionados, had the opportunity to see French comics artist David Prudhomme, creator of the award-winning graphic novel REBETIKO, and Bruno Brindisi, Italian artist of the popular DYLAN DOG series (guest of Jemma Press).

Japanese comics (manga) have conquered the Western World, gaining more and more fans in the process. Cartoonist Sonia Leong, who also illustrated this year’s catalog cover, arrived from Great Britain and presented her unique comics work!

From California, we welcomed award-winning webcomics creator Shaenon Garrity, along with Cartoon Art Museum curator and author, Andrew Farago.

This year’s surprise guests traveled from Cuba, as a group of political cartoonists and animators gave us a peek at their own artistic world. Their visit gave us the chance to collaborate once again with the Charles M. Schulz Museum and welcome our great friend and Comicdom Con Athens supporter, Jean Schulz, four years after her last visit!

This year’s Comicdom Con Athens featured -for the very first time in the event’s history- a cosplay competition! Recognizing the continuous growth and influence of this particular activity in Greece, we decided to give a chance to the most creative and dedicated fans, to show their skills, passion, talent and flair. Characters from comics, animation, manga, anime, movies, TV series and video games, came alive on the stage of the HellenicAmerican Union Theater – and the best were rewarded for their efforts!
