Comics are considered the 9th Art, and as this was, in fact, our 9th event, we had to have the number “nine” as our unofficial theme for that year.
International guests of Comicdom Con Athens 2014 included acclaimed Spanish writer Enrique Sánchez Abulí, co-creator of the popular TORPEDO 1936, Eisner Award-winning British artist Glenn Fabry, well-known for his legendary covers for titles such as HELLBLAZER and PREACHER, rising Italian artist Emanuela Lupacchino, known for her work on many titles for big American publishers, French comics creator Pénélope Bagieu, whose comic (JOSEPHINE) recently got adapted for the silver screen, talented Irish creator Stephen Mooney (in collaboration with the Embassy of Ireland), Norwegian cartoonist Martin Ernstsen (in collaboration with the Embassy of Norway), and Hungarian animator and comics creator, Zoltán Fritz.
In honor of the 9th Art, our main exhibition was titled Celebrating 9th Art, in which original pages, comics, graphic novels and illustrations were presented, underlining the universal appeal of our favorite artform. A major part of the exhibits was presented in our country for the first time, while the exhibition was also sanctioned by the Greek National Committee for Unesco.
Among the highlights of the three-day event, were the first admission-free screening of epic fantasy film THE DRAGONPHOENIX CHRONICLES: INDOMITABLE, based on the popular Yannis Rubulias comic series by the same name, the “Marvel Vs DC” panel, which connected all the superhero geeks by… dividing them, the “Recreating The All-Time Best Comic Covers” sketch event , with ten great illustrators from both the greek and international scene, drawing live for the audience, and of course, our super-popular Comicdom Cosplay contest, which not only gave the word “havoc” a whole new meaning, but also gave the winner a ticket to the EuroCosplay Championships!
Just like every year, our program included workshops presented by both international guests and Greek professionals, panels, animation screenings for young and old alike, and of course, the Comicdom Awards, at their last year of conduct (for a good cause, which would be revealed during the 10th, anniversary event).
