Ο Fumio Obata (γεννημένος το 1975 στο Τόκιο) είναι δημιουργός graphic novels, του οποίου το έργο επικεντρώνεται σε κοινωνικά ζητήματα και θέματα πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς. Μετακόμισε στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο το 1991 και φοίτησε στο Glasgow School of Art και το Royal College of Art του Λονδίνου. Στις δουλειές του περιλαμβάνονται το “Just So Happens” (Jonathan Cape, 2014), το οποίο έχει μεταφραστεί σε 9 διαφορετικές γλώσσες, και το “The Garden” (Liminal 11, 2019) που γράφτηκε από τον Σκωτσέζο συγγραφέα Sean Michael Wilson, ο οποίος ζει στην Ιαπωνία. Προηγουμένως, έκανε ένα διάλειμμα από τα graphic novels για να επικεντρωθεί στη διδασκαλία της εικονογράφησης και αυτή τη στιγμή ετοιμάζεται να επιστρέψει με μια σειρά από δουλειές σε συνεργασία με αμερικανικές και γαλλικές εκδοτικές.
Παράλληλα, ο Fumio ανέπτυξε έντονο ενδιαφέρον για τα δημοσιογραφικά comics. Μεταξύ 2013- 2021 δημοσίευσε μια σειρά από mini comics για τις συνέπειες του σεισμού και του τσουνάμι στο Τοχόκου, το 2011, τα οποία συγκλόνισαν την Ιαπωνία. Πραγματοποίησε επίσης ατομικές εκθέσεις εμπνευσμένες από το ίδιο θέμα στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο και τη Γαλλία με τίτλο “On the Palm of Unknown” (2017-19). Το τελευταίο του αντίστοιχο comic επικεντρώνεται στη ζωή του Φραντς Κάφκα, “Looking for Franz” (2024), με αφορμή τη συμπλήρωση 100 χρόνων από τον θάνατο του συγγραφέα.
Τα θέματα του μελετούν τον μηχανισμό της αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ κράτους και ανθρώπων, αλλά μέσα από μια πιο προσωπική εμπειρία. Το μοναδικό του στυλ είναι επηρεασμένο τόσο από την ιαπωνική όσο και από την ευρωπαϊκή αισθητική.

Fumio Obata (born 1975, Tokyo) is a graphic novelist whose work focus on cultural heritages and social issues. He moved to the UK in 1991 and was trained at Glasgow School of Art and Royal College of Art in London. His graphic novels include ‘Just So Happens’ (Jonathan Cape, 2014), which has been translated into 9 different languages, and ‘The Garden’ (Liminal 11, 2019) written by a Japan based Scottish author Sean Michael Wilson. He took a hiatus from Graphic Novels to concentrate on lecturing in Illustration and currently returning with a series of book projects with US and French publishers.
Fumio has developed a strong interest in reportage comics. Between 2013- 2021 he published a series of mini documentary comics on the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that shocked Japan. He also held solo exhibitions based on the same theme in the UK and France called ‘On the Palm of Unknown’ (2017-19). His latest reportage work focuses on the life of Franz Kafka, ‘Looking for Franz’ (2024), marking the 100 the anniversary since the author’s death.
His theme expands into mechanism of interrelationship between state and people, but through a personal experience. His unique style is influenced by both Japanese and European esthetics.
